PHAN THIET INFORMATION

Phan Thiet town is the capital city of Bình Thuen Province, in southeastern Vietnam. Located on an arm of the South China Sea, Phan Thiet is one of Vietnam's most important fishing areas. Its population is roughly 205,333 (as of 2004). Ho Chí Minh lived in Phan Thiet for a short time and taught at the Duc Thành school.

The friendly fishing port of PHAN THIET is one of the stepping stones between Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi, not least because of its proximity to wonderful Cape Mui Ne, a 21-kilometre-long arc of fine sand. Though Mui Ne is undoubtedly the main draw of the area, Phan Thiet does have some hidden charms of its own and makes a good break from the beach. Quaint colonial villas season Phan Thiet's main streets, some decorated with glazed ceramic tiles, most with louvred windows and colonnaded facades. Turn left off the southwestern end of Tran Hung Dao Bridge, and stroll along Trung Trac, and you'll soon plunge into the wharfside fish market.

Back in the other direction, Trung Trac skirts the city centre en route to the riverside Ho Chi Minh Museum, rather a flat museum, but with some nicely quaint memorabilia. A couple of hundred metres south on Tran Phu, Ong Pagoda also merits a browse. Over Tran Hung Dao Bridge, Vo Thi Sau strikes off to the right and to the city beach which, 700m northeast, opens out into a more pleasant pine-shaded spot.

History
During the Vietnam War, Phan Thiet was the site of the U.S. military base known as Landing Zone Betty, which was located at the now closed airfield southwest of the city. In recent years, Phan Thiet (specifically Mui Ne Beach district) has been transformed into a resort destination.

October 24, 1995 is considered to be the birth of tourism in Phan Thiet, when thousands rushed to Mui Ne to see the total solar eclipse. The event was commemorated on the same day in 2005 as the tenth anniversary of tourism for the province. Local people in Phan Thiet regularly practice a ceremony to a whale god, which is believed to give good luck in nautical pursuits

Phan Thiet is the main city of Binh Thuan province, Phan Thiet has a long coastline with a hot, mainly dry climate and average temperatures of a little more than 27 degrees. During the revolution against the French, it was in this area that the two patriots Phan Chu Trinh and Tran Quy Cap had their start. Furthermore, according to local lore, the area around Phan Thiet is where Han Mac Tu, the disfigured poet, spent his time forlornly as he waited for Mong Cam, the lady of his dreams. Located in Binh Thuan province, Phan Thiet is 200 km from Saigon and lies south of Cam Ranh bay on the southernmost stretch of Central Vietnam. Binh Thuan was once a part of the Cham kingdom.

In 1692, Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu captured the area and named it Binh Thuan Dinh. Binh Thuan is quite important in Vietnam's history, as it was because of this area that in 1306 King Tran Nhan Tong agreed to the marriage of princess Huyen Chan to King Jaya Sinhavarman III of the Cham Kingdom.
